Will Chicago Bears highlight this RB in the preseason?
One player who may be most intriguing this preseason is Trestan Ebner. While the Chicago Bears will have a specific plan for Justin Fields that let them see enough to be comfortable, but not enough to get him injured, Ebner is a player who has a chance to see a lot of work in the preseason.
Ebner is a sixth-round pick and a rookie, so he is still in the mode of proving that he can make the roster. Beyond that, the team is not completely loaded with depth at running back.
David Montgomery is a player that we do not need to see in the preseason at all. Khalil Herbert can get some work here and there, mainly with the starters, but after that, it will be a mix of Darrynton Evans, DeMontre Tuggle, and Ebner.
What will be interesting with Ebner is how he is used. There have been reports that Ebner is often used in the slot as a complementary player instead of a lead running back.
Fans have posted clips of him dominating receiving drills in space, and the hope is that he can help ease the issues at wideout by being a pseudo-slot player.
The question will be how often the team will show that. When they bust this out, it typically is with the starters. Ebner may not get much work there considering they will need him to handle a decent workload during the preseason.
This also could be a time for Ebner to develop as a runner between the tackles. Over three games the Bears will have 12 quarters of snaps to fill out. That could mean a full game’s worth of snaps for someone like Ebner over that span. That could give us a look into how Ebner will be used, and how he will be able to grow as a between-the-tackles runner.
