Must-watch Chicago Bears in preseason Week 1: Notable Mentions

These guys did not make the list, but they are definitely players I will pay attention to tomorrow. Some might be on the bubble and some might play less popular positions. Either way, I find that their performance will shed some light on things before the first of cut days next Tuesday.

Dazz Newsome, WR

It appears from a wide receiver standpoint, Dazz Newsome is on the bubble. However, he might be pushing for a roster spot due to his special teams performance. As of now, the unofficial depth chart of the Chicago Bears has Newsome listed as the starting punt returner. Can he make enough of an impact as a receiver tomorrow to force Matt Eberflus’ and Ryan Poles’ hands?

Trenton Gill, P

Let’s keep with the special teams talk, shall we? I know he’s only the punter but as Chicago Bears fans know, the punter can be extremely important on this team. I want to see Gill in action during a game and will be watching him closely tomorrow.

Tavon Young, NCB

Originally, Thomas Graham was starting in the nickel cornerback spot. However, due to an injury, he has given way to Tavon Young — the guy originally projected to start anyway. With Graham sidelined, I want to see if Young has returned to his solid form from his days in Baltimore prior to the injuries that caused him to miss multiple games over the last couple of years.

Lamar Jackson, CB

Can Lamar Jackson push Duke Shelley off the depth chart?

Justin Jones, DT

Can Justin Jones play the 3-technique in a way that makes it look like Ryan Poles was a genius to walk away from Larry Ogunjobi?

Trestan Ebner, RB

Many have been saying Trestan Ebner looks legit out of the backfield and as a receiver. I want to see him in action as the “gadget” guy.

Sam Mustipher, C

Has Sam Mustipher been able to improve at all from last year? If not, how hard are we praying for Lucas Patrick to heal faster?
