Chicago Bears start roster cuts with promising UDFA
The Chicago Bears have until tomorrow to get from 90 roster spots to 85, which means that five players will be let go in the next 24 hours. The first one came across this morning with Carson Taylor, a UDFA from Northern Arizona.
This would not be a surprising move if it were not for his OTA reports. The media was noting Carson Taylor as a big winner from OTAs, and a player who was getting work and looking good against Teven Jenkins.
One thing to remember from those sessions is who was and was not active there. Al-Quadin Muhammad missed all of the OTAs with an injury and Robert Quinn was a no-show. Trevis Gipson got some work but missed some time and by the end of the week, Dominique Robinson and Carson Taylor were the top two edge rushers by default.
So, Taylor may have flashed against Jenkins, but we later learned that this may be what was cooling the staff on Jenkins, not raising the heat on Taylor.
Two other factors that may have played into this is Sam Kamara and Mario Edwards. These two are versatile linemen that can be defined as inside-outside players who can move from the guard to tackle.
The Chicago Bears seem to like both of them on the edge right now, and it starts to add a lot of depth to the room.
Another notable situation from this is that Charles Snowden stayed over Carson Taylor. Snowden was a Pace UDFA, but he flashed more in the preseason, and according to Ryan Poles was worth keeping around a bit longer than his rookie UDFA Carson Taylor.
It will be interesting to see who joins Taylor as the roster slowly gets closer to the 53 men that we will see in a few weeks.
