The performance from Michael Schofield was one of the more anticipated players of the Chicago Bears preseason opener. The team had just signed him before training camp and had been working to get him up to speed in the past couple of weeks.
He has only been getting mixed in with the first team, so there were plenty of questions as to how he would perform when things went live. It did not go well.
Schofield was a part of a sack allowed to Justin Fields when Chris Jones walked him back into the quarterback.
It is fair to say that you cannot read many names behind Aaron Donald as the top interior lineman before getting to Chris Jones. Still, this was certainly a sign of rust and getting back into the swing of things for Schofield.
Later in the game, he struggled in run defense against Taylor Stallworth. Khalil Herbert was wrapped up in the backfield, mainly because Schofield was beaten off of the football and got worked to the inside.
It is easy to say that Schofield was just dusting off the rust, but at the same time, this has to be concerning for the Chicago Bears. They do not have much invested in the position beyond him.
Ja’Tyre Carter was next-in-line at right guard, and he showed some positives but is still a rookie who could not be thrust into a starting job yet.
There are reports that the team is finally going to look into Teven Jenkins at right guard. That could be a combination of them being comfortable in Braxton Jones at left tackle, and a fear of Schofield at right guard that makes the team think that they need fewer snaps at tackle and more snaps at guard from Jenkins.
After the performance Schofield, no one can blame for mixing things up. Still, as of now, he is still in the driver’s seat to start week one, which could be an issue.
