Chicago Bears 53-man roster projection after preseason week 2
The Chicago Bears have completed two out of three preseason games this offseason so we have as strong of a picture as ever when it comes to who will make the roster. We had an updated 53-man roster projection after preseason week one, so this week will be mainly about highlighting the differences from one week to the other.
Quarterback (2): Justin Fields, Trevor Siemian
This is set as the same as last week.
Running back (4): David Montgomery, Khalil Herbert, Trestan Ebner, Khari Blassingame
Blassingame had a cast on his hand, but until we hear otherwise he should be back for week one.
Tight end (4): Cole Kmet, Ryan Griffin, James O’Shaugnessy, Chase Allen
Jake Tonges got work at fullback with Blassingame out and could make it as an extra tight end or a fullback if Blassingame is hurt.
Wide receiver (6): Darnell Mooney, Byron Pringle, Velus Jones, Equanimeous St. Brown, Dante Pettis, N’Keal Harry (Tajae Sharpe)
Harry has to make the initial roster to get placed on the IR. Tajae Sharpe is a great player to choose to make the cut and re-sign a few hours later because he is on a veteran contract that will not require him to clear waivers. Younger players will have to clear waivers.
Offensive line (9): Braxton Jones, Cody Whitehair, Lucas Patrick, Riley Reiff, Larry Borom, Teven Jenkins, Zach Thomas, Sam Mustipher, Ja’Tyre Carter
Michael Schofield played until the start of the fourth quarter in preseason week two. Ja’Tyre Carter was behind him, but Schofield has shown nothing worth keeping him over the rookie at this point. We have Schofield out.
Defensive line (4): Justin Jones, Angelo Blackson, Khyiris Tonga, Trevon Coley
Last week we had rookie UDFA Micah Dew-Treadway, this week we have Trevon Coley. It was clear that the veteran was working ahead of MDT last night, and he was in the backfield consistently. The coaches may see a year on the practice squad for MDT, while Coley can make the roster.
Edge (6): Robert Quinn, Trevis Gipson, Al-Quadin Muhammad, Dominique Robinson, Mario Edwards, Sam Kamara
Sam Kamara may have shown too much in his last game to the point where he actually may get claimed on waivers. The Chicago Bears can add six edge rushers knowing they are thin on the interior.
Linebacker (5): Roquan Smith, Nicholas Morrow, Matt Adams, Joe Thomas, Jack Sanborn
This is the same five that we had last week.
Cornerback (5): Jaylon Johnson, Kyler Gordon, Tavon Young, Kindle Vildor, BoPete Keyes
This week we have Keyes replacing Lamar Jackson. Jackson ran ahead of Keyes, but the much better the past two games has been Keyes, who was tested often, and played tough.
Safety (5): Jaquan Brisker, Eddie Jackson, DeAndre Houston-Carson, Dane Cruikshank, Elijah Hicks
This is the same as last week.
ST (3): Cairo Santos, Trenton Gil, Patrick Scales
This one is locked in stone.
