5 takeaways from the Bears impressive victory over the Seahawks
The Chicago Bears have found their starting right guard… and he might actually be decent
The Teven Jenkins debacle has taken more turns than a C-rated M. Night Shyamalan movie. On the bright side, it looks like we might finally be nearing the end of the seemingly endless flick, and it shockingly might even be headed for a happy ending.
The team’s decision to move him to the interior seemed like more of a last-ditch effort to salvage his career than a chance for him to grab a starting job. However, Michael Schofield’s struggles in the first preseason game opened the door for him to make more of the opportunity, and he took full advantage of it, as he played lights out against Seattle and had several key blocks in both the run and pass game.
Is he destined to reach his Pro Bowl potential on the interior? Absolutely not. Is he a lock to become a quality starter at his new position? Nope. Is he even guaranteed a long enough leash to ensure he will play the entire season as a starter? No, but he all but locked up the starting position for Week 1, and that is an incredibly positive development when he was a dead man walking two weeks ago.
If he can build off his strong debut and continue to grow into his new position, then there is no reason to believe he won’t become a successful reclamation project on the interior. He is only 24 years old and has all the intangibles of an elite offensive lineman. Likewise, the fact that he has already bounced back after everything he went through is also a great testament to his character and proof that he has the mental makeup to succeed.
