2. Extra tight end or running back?

This is not quite a position battle, but more of a question of numbers. At tight end, Cole Kmet is accompanied by Ryan Griffin and James O’Shaugnessy. At running back it is David Montgomery, Khalil Herbert, and Trestan Ebner.

The team does not need a fourth in either, but they likely have room for at least. The question then becomes should they add depth at running back or tight end?

This will likely come down to Chase Allen vs. Darrynton Evans. Evans is behind Ebner is a bit redundant. At the same time, Ebner is a rookie, he is banged up, and he struggles in pass protection, so Evans could be valuable as depth.

Allen is a Jesse James look-a-like with a similar upside. Still, we saw Fields use that big body in the red zone often during training camp last year, and Allen has shown well, arguably better than O’Shaugneesy in the preseason.

Allen has more upside but is also easier to get onto the practice squad. Then, there is Jake Tonges, who could make it for special teams. He is a backup fullback, and depth tight end, so he technically could check depth roles in both boxes.

It is likely that only one of these three will make it, so now the question is who can establish an edge in the final game.
