Chicago Bears Surprise Roster Cut: Darrynton Evans, RB

With both Khalil Herbert and Trestan Ebner banged up, we should see a heavy dose of Darrynton Evans vs the Browns on Saturday. With the Chicago Bears focused on keeping a fullback, that’s going to limit the amount of running back spots the team will have available on the roster.

Ryan Poles picked up Darrynton Evans off waivers this offseason. This is a significant thing to remember. Evans doesn’t have any guaranteed money coming from the Bears. He was on his rookie deal and when the Titans waived him, they were locked into whatever guaranteed money was left on the deal. Evans is due over $1 million this season should he remain on the team, but after the emergence of Ebner, I think it’s safe to say this regime will stick with their draft pick.

Evans had a solid showing vs. Seattle. He averaged 4.9 yards on eight carries and scored a touchdown. If for some reason the team elects to keep four running backs, or one (or both) of Khalil Herbert or Trestan Ebner isn’t healthy enough to start the season, then Evans makes this team. However, there is a chance that Evans sees the door and I think many Bears fans would be surprised by that cut.
