5. Demarquis Gates

Demarquis Gates has been one of the more exciting players to watch in the preseason. Gates went from the AAF to the XFL to the USFL before catching the eye of the Chicago Bears this summer. Gates signed on during training camp but immediately started to stand out.

He made multiple plays in the first two preseason games, and while he was a bit quieter in the finale, he was getting special teams work. He also was clearly ahead of Caleb Johnson, a UDFA that the new front office inherited from Ryan Pace.

When looking at the linebacker room, Roquan Smith, Nicholas Morrow, and Matt Adams are the starters with Joe Thomas and Jack Sanborn as the reserves. It leaves a practice squad spot for one of Gates, and Johnson, there are no other linebackers.

When you consider that Gates is ahead of Johnson you have to assume that he will lock in a spot on the practice squad.
