Biggest “Names” the Chicago Bears Cut: Mario Edwards, Jr., DE
The first name that I noticed on the Chicago Bears cut/waive list was Mario Edwards. Edwards is an established player throughout the NFL, but he’s also nothing but average. He has not seen more than four sacks in a season and averages less than three sacks per year throughout his career. He has shown flashes here in Chicago, but seeing him cut isn’t much of a surprise.
I originally had Mario Edwards on my final 53-man roster, but while talking about the situation with my podcast (The Halas Huddle) co-host, I admittedly stated Edwards was a fringe player I could see being kept just to be cut for a guy the team claims/signs once roster cuts are final. I decided to swap him out on that podcast for DeMarquis Gates. Guess what? He didn’t make the team either.
Edwards hasn’t been able to stay on the field long enough this offseason to show the new coaching staff what he can do. I think when you look at the types of players Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus decided to keep, youth played a major role in deciding between fringe players. Edwards just didn’t have enough.
