2. Trevon Coley

This can basically be a copy and paste of the Mario Edwards discussion. However, while Edwards slowly slipped off of the roster due to an injury, Coley saw himself rise up the depth chart to the point where some thought he should have made the roster.

Coley was let go, but he is the type of player that you do this maneuver with. He is a long-standing veteran and he is not a hot commodity. As noted, he entered the summer as a camp body, and now he is in a spot where he was earning the coaches’ respect. It would be hard for him to win over new staff.

The coaching staff may have invited him into the staff room and told him that if he takes one for the team, and gets cut, that they will re-sign him 24 hours later and give him a small bump in pay. For a player like Coley that is a big win.

For the Chicago Bears, they can add Harry to the initial 53, and cut Coley with the knowledge that they have a bird in the bush. The team needs depth on the defensive line, and Coley looked like he was a good fit as a depth player. Keep an eye on where he winds up.
