Ranking Chiacgo Bears 2022 Practice Squad
5. AJ Thomas
AJ Thomas was an underrated winner of the preseason. With Jaquan Brisker banged up at times, and Dane Cruikshank missing a lot of snaps as well, it opened plenty of playing time for the rookie UDFA from Western Michigan.
Thomas took advantage and showed himself to be a ball-aware player with a good tackling radius. Still, what locked Thomas onto the practice squad was his special teams’ ability.
AJ Thomas started in the Chicago Bears preseason finale on special teams. While that obviously is not everything, the game was the dress rehearsal for all phases, so they were viewing what it would be like if he made the team.
It is hard to make the roster on special teams alone, especially as a sixth safety. Still, the gesture spoke to the Bears’ confidence in his growth. If there are issues at safety, he will be the first to call, no matter which of the five went down.
