2. Joe Thomas

Considering Joe Thomas made the initial 53-man roster this one is pretty easy to call out as the number two player. The team released him as they shuffled the roster, but still, it has to be noted that they claimed Sterling Weatherford, a rookie UDFA and released Thomas from the same position room.

The reason that Thomas was going to make the roster was special teams. Thomas was not showing much on defense but was one of the top three performers on the roster from a special team’s perspective.

Weatherford also has special teams in his background, so that hurt his case. Thomas is a veteran, while Weatherford is a rookie, so when all things are equal, they went with the upside.

Still, they could have the UDFA rookie for three weeks, and realize this is not what they signed up for. That would mean that Thomas is right back on the roster. Beyond that, his special teams ability helps because they may now want to call him up if other positions go down.
