The Chicago Bears will lead the league in takeaways

Chicago has a storied history of strong play on the defensive side of the ball, and they brought in head coach Matt Eberflus to uphold those standards this offseason. Eberflus is the perfect coach to help the Bears’ defense become feared again, as the culture he has built emphasizes intensity and playing through the whistle, two things essential to a team’s success on defense.

He previously served as the Colts’ defensive coordinator from 2018-2021, and he helped their unit become one of the league’s stoutest defenses. They were especially impressive in the turnover department, where they finished in the top ten in each of his seasons with the team. His HITS formula worked wonders on Indy’s defense, and there is reason to believe it will have a similar impact on the Bears.

The team’s additions to that side of the ball could prove vital in their attempt to restore the Monsters of the Midway. Analysts and fans alike mocked the team’s choice to go defense with their first two selections in the draft, but nobody will be questioning the additions of Kyler Gordon and Jaquan Brisker if they become valuable contributors in turning the defense around.

Chicago’s defense has struggled to replicate their incredible 2018 campaign, but they have since remained near the top ten in total yards allowed, which proves they have talent on that side of the ball. A lack of takeaways has been their most glaring detriment, and the hiring of Eberflus shows they plan to attack that weakness head-on.

The Chicago Bears make up for their lack of star power with young players who are hungry to prove themselves, especially on the defensive side of the ball. If these players can adapt to the scheme and gain confidence in playing with one another, there is no telling how good they can be. The defense has the potential to force the most turnovers in the league if they find their groove early in the season.
