The Week 1 matchup between the Chicago Bears and the San Francisco 49ers was a tale of two halves. The first half was dominated by the 49ers on both sides of the ball, although neither team was able to get much going on offense. The second half saw the Bears capitalize on the 49er’s self-woes and an offensive resurgence led to the Bears taking it at home 19-10. It was not a pretty win by any means, but the offense and defense took care of business when needed, and ultimately the Bears start off the year 1-0.
Which Chicago Bears players stood out in the Week 1 victory?
Winner No. 1: Dominique Robinson
The entire rookie class for the Chicago Bears looked solid during Sunday’s game, but one that especially stood out was edge rusher, Dominique Robinson. He finished the game with seven total tackles, and 1.5 sacks, along with several pressures. While the starters were Robert Quinn and Al-Quadin Muhammad, we saw a lot out of Robinson and even Trevis Gipson.
The hype in the offseason and in training camp was very real for Robinson, who is a great athlete with great size at his position. He was seen as a steal in the fifth round out of Miami, and he showed the kind of potential he has in his effort against the 49ers. He rushed with strength and speed on the edge, and was around the football a lot, as shown by being third on the team in total tackles.
Robinson took advantage of his limited reps, and we saw more of him as the game went on. With no more Khalil Mack on the team, there will have to be more balance among the pass rush unit. With names like Quinn, Muhammad, Gipson, and Robinson, it seems there is plenty of depth at the edge spot. If Robinson keeps playing like this, he is going to be in the conversation for starting opposite Quinn. Expect to see more of Robinson next week against the Packers after his excellent showing in Week 1.
