Chicago Bears Week 1 Overreaction No. 1: The 49ers wish Justin Fields was their quarterback

All game, this thought was running through my mind.

Sure, the field conditions were less than ideal, but it’s not like the weather turned off when Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears were on offense.

"Trey Lance’s Week 1 performance 13/28 (46.4% comp), 164 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT, 13 rushes, 54 rushing yards, 1 fumble Justin Fields’ Week 1 performance 8/17 (47.1% comp), 121 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 11 rushes, 28 rushing yards"

Sure, those stats look pretty similar, but Trey Lance cost three first-round picks and a third-round pick, while Justin Fields cost a first-round pick swap, a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, and two fifth-round picks (one in 2021 and one in 2022).

So, when looking at the nitty-gritty of it, the Chicago Bears got a much better deal on their franchise quarterback than the San Francisco 49ers got on their “franchise quarterback.”

Not only this, but Justin Fields did this with “no weapons,” while Trey Lance did what he did with Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and Trent Williams protecting him.

For those that think I’m being too tough on Trey Lance after a poor performance in terrible weather, read the title again.

Can Trey Lance come back from this abysmal performance? Of course, he can. But it’s not in my hopes and dreams, that’s for sure.
