How has Chicago Bears HC Matt Eberflus done against Aaron Rodgers?
While we all know the Chicago Bears track record against Aaron Rodgers, the thought is that this is a new team and it certainly is new leadership. Still, while Matt Eberflus has been an NFL head coach for just one game, he has been in the NFL since 2009.
That means that over the course of his coaching career he has seen Aaron Rodgers on the other side five times.
It is worth noting that only one was when he was a defensive coordinator, while three were with the Cowboys as a linebackers coach, and one was with the Browns as a linebackers coach.
In 2009 he was one of the first coaches introduced to Rodgers as his Browns lost 31-3 in his second year as a starter.
Rodgers went 15-20 and threw for 246 yards. He threw three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Of course, we have to give some of that to the fact that Cleveland was so bad in 2009.
In 2015 Eberflus saw Rodgers again, this time as a linebackers coach and passing game coordinator. Rodgers was 22-35 for 218 yards with two touchdowns and no picks. He was sacked twice, but his team put up 28 points and won the game.
Matt Eberflus beat Aaron Rodgers for the first time in 2016. His defense helped hold Rodgers to 16 points, as he was 31-42 for 294 yards. He had one touchdown, one pick, and a sack. Then, in 2017 he put up 35 points in a win. Rodgers went 19-29 for 221 yards with three touchdowns, no picks, and a notable four sacks.
So, in four games as an assistant, he is 1-3 against Rodgers. Rodgers has a 72.6% completion rate. with 6.9 ypa, and 6 TDs, with 1 Int. Those are rates of 5.5%, and 0.9%.
For his career, Rodgers is a 65.3% completion passer, with 7.8 ypa, 6.3% TD rate, and 1.3% INT rate. So, he completes more passes, but at a lower yardage rate, and fewer touchdowns.
Lastly, in 2020, Matt Eberflus got the chance to call play against him after only being an assistant. Rodgers went 27-38 for 311 yards. He had 3 touchdowns, one interception, and was sacked once. While Rodgers put up 31 points, his team did lose, so Eberflus has two notable wins against Rodgers-led teams.
Still, being an assistant is great and he has experience against him. Being a coordinator can tell us a bit, but now we will see him as a head coach, which will be the real test.
