Unfortunately, the story remains the same with the Green Bay Packers beating the Chicago Bears on Sunday Night Football at Lambeau Field by a final score of 27-10. It was not a good showing for the team as a whole, although the game was closer than the score indicates. There is enough blame to go around for why the team struggled today, but it was clear where the biggest holes were in this game.

Player One: Cole Kmet

Whether it is because the Chicago Bears are not passing the ball enough or because he is not getting open, Cole Kmet has had about as bad of a start to the year as one could imagine. He has gone two games now without a catch, and while he has been good in his blocking duties, he is a focal part of this offense and needs to play as such. We saw him develop chemistry with Justin Fields over the latter part of last season and most thought that would have carried over to this year, but so far nothing.

It is worth noting that he and Darnell Mooney have been completely absent from the offense this year. Most of that is due to the Bears not opening up the playbook and only passing the ball a total of 28 times through two games. Still, though, Kmet needs to understand how to get open more, especially in plays that need improvising from Justin Fields. The tight end should be a safety option for the quarterback since they are usually a bigger target. Kmet can use his size to shield off defenders and “box them out” in a way to get in position for a catch.

It is still early in the season with a lot of time and opportunities left for Kmet to get going. Nonetheless, he is arguably the second-best pass catcher on this team and needs to play like it. If Mooney is going to struggle in this offense, then Cole Kmet needs to step up.

The development of this offense as a unit is built around the young talent, and Kmet is right in the center of that. He needs to step up as a reliable option for Justin Fields in the coming weeks, and Luke Getsy should really try to get him more involved.
