Player three: Kyler Gordon
Just like in last week’s article, this is not because Kyler Gordon is going to be a bust, or already is a bust, but just because he has not looked particularly sharp in his first two games. He is picked for this list after Week 2 because it was evident he was getting picked on today, and there was nothing he could do about it.
Kyler Gordon has huge potential to be a shut-down corner, but he has not been as NFL-ready as advertised. He seems to be a step late in his reactions to his matchups but luckily makes up some time with his superb footwork. Unfortunately, that does not bring success at the NFL level. He is going to have to work on quicker reactions and better mirroring of a route, especially in man coverage. The Bears primarily run zone, but he still has shown a low awareness so far.
Time will help him to get better at these parts of the job, and we have already seen glimpses of his potential. It will be important for Gordon to continue watching film of his own tape and the opponents because it will help him recognize when to be aggressive and when to play off of his matchup.
The Chicago Bears are relying on big contributions from their first selection in this year’s draft, and so far, they have not gotten them. He has not played bad in his first two games, but he has not been good. He has moved around a bit but has mostly been playing in the nickel. That is one of the tougher assignments in football, but he showed throughout camp he was ready for the test. Let’s hope it starts to translate to gameday.
After a quick start, the Bears were not able to compete with the Green Bay Packers consistently, and they suffered their first loss of the year because of it. Their lack of production in the passing game and their inability to stop the run was what brought them in such a large deficit, even if the game was closer than the score suggests.
