Chicago Bears Dud No. 3: The entire pass rush

For the second week in a row, the Chicago Bears pass rush has been virtually nonexistent. Justin Jones and Dominique Robinson combined for one sack on Davis Mills today. That is pretty much it. There were very few pressures by anyone on the defensive line today and it showed when Davis Mills was able to convert some huge third downs while having a pocket that clean.

It is evident that the Bears lack talent on the defensive line. There is solid depth there with Robert Quinn, Trevis Gipson, Justin Jones, Al-Quadin Muhammad, Dominique Robinson, Armon Watts, and Angelo Blackson. Unfortunately, Quinn was not able to get the job done against Laremy Tunsil and the rest of the defensive line could not take advantage of a weak supporting cast on the Texans’ offensive front.

Matt Eberflus and Alan Williams will have to figure out how to get more pressure on the quarterback. It might mean giving fewer reps to Muhammad, who has not looked as sharp as advertised. It could also mean blitzing more, something which the Bears rarely do. The Bears were fortunate that they were playing a quarterback who is still developing. We saw what a veteran can do against a lackluster pass rush last week in Green Bay.

With the lack of talent on the defensive line, the Bears are going to have to scheme pressure more. We saw the defense do some different things today in order to generate pressure, including some stunts. Maybe they should try Quinn on the right side, so he does not have to face the left tackle all game long. Something has to be done to generate more pressure because opposing quarterbacks have way too much time and comfort against the Bears.

Panic is setting in for Bears fans. dark. Next

The best way to go into the week is off of a win. The Chicago Bears can now look to address these issues and performances but still be in the win column. They will have a lot of work to do because these performances were simply unacceptable today. Let’s hope to see some sort of improvement in these areas next week.
