The Chicago Bears look to be without Jaylon Johnson again this week as they face the New York Giants on Sunday. This is a blow, but it’s more important that Johnson return in Week 5 vs the Vikings. The Vikings have three good receivers while the Giants are somewhat limited in that department. It still would be nice for Johnson to be back. David Montgomery has also been ruled out for Week 4, but that was to be expected. The good news is that the Bears look to be getting rookie, Velus Jones back — this would be his rookie, regular season debut.

Velus Jones was limited for two practices last week and another two this week. Today, he was a full participant and is listed as questionable for the game. It’s possible that the coaching staff will want to see a full week of practice before playing Jones, but it’s also possible they have no choice but to play him since they just put Kindle Vildor on injured reserve earlier in the week.

The Chicago Bears offense has been lacking from a passing-game perspective, but maybe Velus Jones can add the spark that Luke Getsy and Justin Fields need. Jones isn’t some top prospect though. He’s a third-rounder who has great potential as a yards-after-catch (YAC) receiver. He is solid and has good size, but he’s also blazing fast. He ran a 4.31 at the Combine.

Justin Fields definitely can use some help. Some fans are starting to believe the coaches don’t trust him, despite some recent video evidence suggesting otherwise. Darnell Mooney has not lived up to expectations and only Equanimeous St. Brown has been somewhat decent for this team. It doesn’t help that the Chicago Bears and Fields have only attempted 45 passes. This isn’t to say only 45 pass plays have been called by Getsy, but Fields has only thrown the ball 45 times.

Here is to hoping that Velus Jones is ready to play vs the Giants. He adds a new skill set to the offense, while also helping them in a somewhat struggling return game. I’d expect to see Jones used in a similar fashion to Deebo Samuel in San Francisco. Maybe he’s a key to help open up the offense this week for Justin Fields too. Either way, I’m excited to at least see what this kid brings to the field on game days. The Bears might be without Cairo Santos though too…can Jones kick?
