Chicago Bears Dud No. 3: Bears’ front seven

It was a tale of two halves for the Chicago Bears’ defense, especially for the defensive line and linebackers. The first half saw the defense torn apart by a lethal Giants play action and boot scheme to complement their success on the ground. The linebackers were biting way too hard on play action and were completely out of control.

We did see clear adjustments after halftime by the Chicago Bears’ defense. The second half saw them play a lot more disciplined which resulted in a lot more success in defending the run and play action. Credit to Matt Eberflus and their defensive coordinator Alan Williams for making those adjustments and executing them.

Still, the pass rush and interior presence have to be better. Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones were able to compile some impressive rushing numbers against this front, with the latter adding two scores on the ground. There was not enough gap discipline in the first half which put the defense on their heels for way too long.

With a depleted secondary and already a lack of start talent on the defense, the Bears’ front seven need to come together and play better. Roquan Smith looked sharp today, but there were some poor missed tackles that just cannot happen.
