Player two: Eddie Jackson

I think that it is safe to say that Eddie Jackson is back. He now has three interceptions in four games and has been that type of ball-hawk center field safety that the Bears expect him to be. Jackson is never going to be elite because of his tackling weakness, but he is one of the best coverage safeties in the league and it has been on display through the first four weeks of this season.

It is incredible what a fresh defensive scheme can do for a player. The last three years Eddie Jackson was a non-factor, but with Matt Eberflus and Alan Williams running the show he has found a career resurgence. Today’s performance against the Giants was just another reminder of the player that he can be when put in a position that plays to his strengths.

The interception that he had today was not an easy one at all. He had to catch the ball over the shoulder while running almost full speed to help Kyler Gordon in single coverage. Yes, the pick was very important, but his presence on the back end of the Bears defense is what has been the best part of his early success. Jackson has been there to help on a lot of key plays this season, especially with rookie Kyler Gordon’s struggles.

Jackson is a leader on this Chicago Bears defense, and he has started playing like it. His awareness from the free safety position is elite and he is able to show that this season. Yes, he still has his flaws, but his strengths are some of the best strengths you can ask for out of a safety. He simply finds a way to take the ball away from the offense, and this defense needs as much of that as possible.
