This quote sounds all too familiar for Chicago Bears fans
Chicago Bears fans are not happy with the start of the second season for Justin Fields. A lot of it can come down to his help and coaching, but there also has to be some blame placed on the quarterback.
It is also hard for Chicago Bears fans to be patient considering the team and its history at the quarterback position. With that in mind, one quote from Sunday’s game really stood out. When asked about a strip sack of Justin Fields, New York Giants pass rusher Azeez Ojulari had this to say.
"“Oh, man, he’s an athlete. You keep him in the pocket and make him play quarterback, try to make him throw the ball, you can get pressure on him.”"
He respects him as an athlete, but the second comment is a bit of a shot. If you make the quarterback play quarterback, you can get pressure on him. That sounds like the Giants do not respect Justin Fields and his ability to maneuver the pocket. They respect him as a runner but do not think he can get the job done as a passer.
If you remember the Mitch Trubisky era, you surely remember a very similar quote from Green Bay Packers cornerback Tramon Williams. This quote came during year two of the Matt Nagy era but after the opening night loss to Green Bay.
"“We wanted to make Mitch play quarterback. We knew they had a lot of weapons, we knew they were dangerous, we knew all of those things. But we knew if we could make Mitch play quarterback, that we’d have a chance.”"
Ojulari and Williams both wanted the Chicago Bears quarterback to play quarterback. Before you get too carried away and assume we are calling Justin Fields the next Mitch Trubisky, we are not going that far yet.
Rather that it is very interesting to see the two players have similar quotes about them from completely different teams and defenders. While this is not a death knell for Fields, it does show how much more he has to grow as a quarterback.
Teams are not saying that they are not worried because of the lack of weapons, but rather that all they have to do is get Fields to play quarterback and they will have success. That is not great.
