With two minutes to go in the first half, the Chicago Bears were trailing 21-3 in a game that was shaping up to be a blowout. The offense had done about nothing, which was going on for five weeks, which made it hard to think any comeback was in store.
However, Justin Fields started the two-minute drill with a launch to Darnell Mooney down the field. Mooney tracked the ball, dove, and caught a one-handed pass on SportsCenter all week.
Three plays later the Chicago Bears scored a touchdown and took a 21-10 deficit into the half.
While that did not feel like a game-changing play at the moment, it clearly set things off for the Bears. The team received the kick at halftime. From there they went on an eight-play drive that had Justin Fields 3-3 with a touchdown pass and a great scramble.
On the next two drives, the Chicago Bears kicked field, goals, which led to the final drive of the game. Fields was leading his team down the field before a stripped receiver gave up the game.
Still, look at what we just highlighted. After the Darnell Mooney reception, the Chicago Bears scored four straight times, putting up 19 points. Justin Fields also was on a game-winning drive and it did not look like he was going to be the one to lose that game.
In fact, after that completion to Mooney, Justin Fields missed just one pass. It is a lot easier to say that the game changed if the Chicago Bears had actually completed the comeback.
Still, for an offense that was struggling to put together one strong drive, all of a sudden they had four straight strong drives all in a row.
Perhaps it was that big catch as the momentum booster. It was the play that made Justin Fields relax and realize that he has this. It was the play that made Luke Getsy say that aggression can lead to good things. Whatever it was, it sparked the best offensive second half of the season, and the hope is that this will continue.
