The sky around Justin Fields might not be falling after all

One could make a serious argument that Justin Fields is in a worse position to succeed than any quarterback in the league. His line is often crumbling in front of him, and he is depending on a group of underwhelming pass-catchers. Needless to say, it is not a great recipe for success.

While he had his fair share of troubles in the first quarter of the year, he looked much more comfortable and in command of the offense against Minnesota. He completed 15 of 21 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown and added another 47 yards on the ground.

His numbers would have been even more impressive if not for the aforementioned backbreaking mistakes made by his receivers, but it was still one of the best statistical performances of his career. More importantly, he looked decisive every time he dropped back to pass, which shows the game is slowing down for him.

The most impressive aspect of the performance was that he still thrived without the help of a strong running game, as Herbert and Montgomery struggled to find much room on the ground and finished the contest with only 31 yards on 16 carries. There will be much better games for the running game ahead, and he should benefit from playing against defenses selling out to stop the run.

It’s hard to not be excited about Fields’ performance against Minnesota, as he is finally starting to show the signs of growth expected from him this year. He has a chance to keep the momentum rolling against an underachieving Commanders defense on Thursday night. If the signal-caller can string together back-to-back strong performances, that will go a long way in silencing his doubters that have already written the second-year passer off as a bust.
