3 things the Chicago Bears must do to beat the Commanders
The Chicago Bears must expand on their offensive gameplan
When we look at what this team has done on offense as a whole, it isn’t great. That said, over the last two weeks, we have seen the offense start to come together — at least a little. Justin Fields has thrown the ball downfield more and it has been working. The problem we saw vs the Giants was not being able to put the ball in the end zone. Last week vs the Vikings, it happened at times again too. The team has to be less predictable in the red zone. I want more creativity.
We saw some with the little pop pass from Justin Fields to Velus Jones, Jr. who was coming across in motion. Jones was able to turn the corner and score from nine yards out. This was a big change from the constant running plays we have seen from this team when close to the end zone. At one point, the team ran 19 runs on 20 plays within the 20. That’s not good playcalling when you aren’t scoring touchdowns consistently.
To help do this, I’d like to see Velus Jones get more involved in the offense vs constantly running out Dante “Drops” Pettis. I’d prefer to see Jones make these mistakes as a rookie than watch Pettis who won’t be here in 2023. Jones needs touches. It’s not like he’s getting any younger, right? If he’s healthy enough to be the return man, he is healthy enough to see more than three plays in a game. Give him touches over Pettis and Ihmir Smith-Marsette.
The Bears also need to keep throwing downfield. Justin Fields may have one of the lowest pass attempts/completions in the NFL but he is leading the NFL in yards per pass completed with an average of 13.9. We need to see more of what we saw vs the Vikings.
Washington is allowing 25.6 points per game and the Bears need to hit that mark. Can we see 30?
