The Chicago Bears left many fans wondering how they could possibly manage to lose to the Washington Commanders after only allowing 12 points and less than 250 total yards at home on Thursday Night Football. While there are a lot of negatives from this game with a lot of blame to go around, some players stood out for their strong performances from Week 6.

The defense held its own for the Chicago Bears in Week 6

Player One: Roquan Smith

This was a strong game for Roquan Smith as the captain of the Bears’ defense. He has shown that he can bounce back from lackluster performances, like that against the Vikings last week. He had twelve total tackles and a sack against the Commanders and showed that sideline-to-sideline skill that he has become famous for within this defense.

There is always a debate as to whether a team should pay top-of-the-market money for a middle linebacker, but the Chicago Bears would be so much worse without Roquan Smith. The plays that he makes, especially the ones that are not counted on the stat sheet, are vital to what this defense does and to the personnel that makes up the defense.

There was a little more blitzing in this game than we have seen in past weeks, most likely because of how banged up the Commanders’ offensive line is and how poor Carson Wentz plays under pressure. Smith had a sack today in the first quarter on a linebacker blitz, and Jaquan Brisker also had a sack blitzing from the box safety position.

The Bears will need this type of performance from Roquan weekly to make up for the struggles of the secondary and the defensive line. He has a heavy burden to carry as the best player on the defense, but he shows consistently he can handle it, even with the Carson Wentz pancake block.
