Everybody agrees that Ryan Poles was dealt a bad hand when he inherited the mess that Ryan Pace handed over from his time with the Chicago Bears. Still, while he was in a tough spot, we are now six weeks into the NFL, so this is officially the Ryan Poles tenure.

We knew that he would not turn the roster around overnight, but he has also made his mistakes when it comes to building the roster. These four moves have not helped the team this year.

4. Chicago Bears drafting Velus Jones Jr.

Everybody and their mother knew that the Chicago Bears needed a wide receiver. The team did very little to add to the position this offseason, and so far, Dante Pettis and Equanimeous St. Brown are his big offseason additions.

When that was the free-agent additions, the assumption was that a wide receiver would be coming. George Pickens was there and the team went defense. Then, the team went with Velus Jones, a player who was not on the top of many fans’ board at the time.

The questions with Velus Jones were that it took him until he was older than his competition to do well in college, and he was a gadget player with special teams ability. So far, the Chicago Bears are not asking him to run routes, and just using him on sweeps and things of that nature.

Of course, then there is the special teams’ disaster. He has fumbled twice, and both times it cost the team the game. His fumble against the Giants cost Justin Fields a chance to lead a drive to tie the game, and in this game, it literally flipped things, as the turnover led to the deciding touchdowns, and the only touchdown by the Washington Commanders.

The Chicago Bears told us to trust their evaluation of Jones and that they did not need anyone else. If they drafted Jones, but added a couple of other legitimate options, or drafted Jones a round or two later after another wideout, it would be no big deal.

The hamstring injury is hard to knock him for, but he has been a disaster on special teams, and that is a big reason why fans and the media were defending the pick. So far, no good.
