3 moves Ryan Poles can make now to save the Chicago Bears in 2022
When it comes to the Chicago Bears, there is plenty to be excited about despite a 2-4 start to the 2022 NFL season. That said, there is plenty to be frustrated about too. This team could easily be 4-2 right now with a close loss to the Giants and a giveaway loss to the Commanders. The thing is, the record here really doesn’t matter. This team is young — very young — and has a long way to go before they are ready to truly compete for a Super Bowl.
The problem though is that right now the coaching staff and general manager are unable to truly evaluate certain positions due to a lack of talent — most specifically Justin Fields. When we talked about this offseason, we all had certain expectations. We knew the team needed help at wide receiver and offensive line. Ryan Poles made many moves to strip this team down to its bones, but he struggled to build it back up again.
The Chicago Bears must find a way to improve this roster now
Chicago Bears fans need to understand that more than one thing can be true at the same time. It’s true that Ryan Poles made the right decision to cut the fat from this team. Moving Khalil Mack when he did was a fantastic move — even though Mack already has five sacks on the year. Cutting Tarik Cohen, Eddie Goldman and others were also right moves. Poles has set this team up for what should be an interesting 2023 offseason. The problem is that he risked not only the 2022 season but also the health of the team’s future in Justin Fields.
Fields has flashed plenty this season, but he has also shown us just how inexperienced he is in this league. We must remember that he just started his 16th game — basically one season — and he’s been learning two separate systems under two different coaching staffs. We have to be patient. The problem is, he doesn’t have the help he needs around him and we saw him struggle to get up over and over again vs the Commanders. Ryan Poles needs to do something now and not wait for 2023.
