Braxton Jones struggled to keep Justin Fields’ pocket clean vs Commanders

There was not much good to speak of for Braxton Jones in the close loss to the Commanders last Thursday. In fact, I only found two plays that I gave Jones a positive score, and both took place during run-blocking plays. That just is not good enough when grading a team’s left tackle.

I find it weird grading the players in this way, but I feel that I have to do my own analysis rather than complain about Pro Football Focus’ (PFF) grading scale all the time. One thing I will never try to do is think I fully understand each play call and/or assignment. We can infer we know, but without knowing the actual assignments, we are just making an educated guess. I account for that in my grading though. This is important to me because it’s one thing I feel PFF lacks in its analysis.

Most of the plays for Braxton Jones were neutral. On these plays, the player did what he was supposed to do, but nothing stood out in a positive or negative way. Jones had 12 plays that I marked as negative. These plays happened mostly on pass-blocking plays. Jones would allow too much pressure or end up blocking no one. None of these plays ended in sacks, but there were times when he let the opponent get inside of him and drive him back to disrupt the play. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the worst of it for Jones.
