Chicago Bears Stud No. 2: Justin Fields, QB
The numbers were not eye-popping for Justin Fields against the Patriots, but he had a very solid game. He finished 13/21 passing for 179 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He shined on the ground once again with 14 carries for 82 yards and a touchdown. A lot of credit goes to the offensive coaching staff, especially play-caller Luke Getsy who had his best game of the season. The plays that were called played to Fields’ strengths and we saw a lot of success on offense because of it.
Fields was able to hit the big throws, especially on third down. He found some easy completions early and flashed some of the arm talent to hit some tight window throws throughout the game. Fields was not perfect and could have hit some plays downfield, but he was very solid throwing the ball, mostly because they got him on the move and rolled him out to use his mobility.
The Bears know what kind of quarterback Fields is, and right now his legs are his best asset. We saw how the Bears decided to commit to using Fields as a runner with a few designed QB runs that led to big gains and some big first downs. We also saw easy passes for Fields to complete, including a blitz-beating screen pass that Fields slung around a defensive end.
These are the types of performances that the Bears need from Justin Fields. He made winning plays and complemented his ability to run with some strong reads and throws. Is it perfect? No, far from it, but he is improving every week. As long as the Chicago Bears continue to play to his strengths there is a lot of success that can be had by the offense.
