This person deserves huge credit for Chicago Bears win
The Luke Getsy experiment as a first-time offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears has gone up and down. That should have been expected when you consider he is a first-year play caller, but nonetheless, fans were already getting on him after the slow start to the season.
Getsy was not perfect, but he also needed more time to get adjusted to the role. The Chicago Bears were lucky to get a long break between a Thursday Night Football game, and a Monday Night Football game.
It was obvious the coaching staff took that time to self-scout, and the results show during a blowout win and the team’s best offensive performance of the season.
Luke Getsy adjusts for Chicago Bears win
One thing we wrote a few weeks ago was that Getsy was not dialing up enough designed runs for Justin Fields. Some of the top quarterbacks such as Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen all had a handful more of designed runs, and Fields was not getting that added weapon into his arsenal.
Coming into the game Justin Fields had just 11 designed run calls on the season. His career high was five in a game. On Monday night he had 11 designed rushes in that single game setting.
The results were that Fields converted third down after third down, rushed for 82 yards, a touchdown, and the team had one of the best performances on the ground against a Bill Belichick defense.
Fields now has 22 designed runs on the season. This is a needed step up, but Jalen Hurts is at 44 and Lamar Jackson is at 31. The reality is that these teams consistently use their quarterback as a weapon.
This should not be some gimmick that they bust out based on the defense. This should be a major piece of the offense. Fields being more of a threat on the ground will freeze linebackers and open passing windows.
Beyond that, it takes at least one set of eyes away from the running backs, who have been dominant this season. If things are about to get easier for David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert then the team is in a great spot moving forward.
With a young team in a rebuilding year you just want to see progress. The fact that Luke Getsy saw he was making a mistake that many were pointing out, then fixed it is a great sign of what he can become as an offensive coordinator.
Keep your eyes on how often this now remains a piece of the offense after it was key to springing things open against the Patriots.
