Since 1960, there have been exactly 10 NFL Drafts that saw four or more quarterbacks taken in the first round. While this happened for the first time in 1983 — a class that included future Hall of Famers John Elway, Jim Kelly, and Dan Marino. This feat most recently occurred in 2021, which saw Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields, and Mac Jones all go in the first round. With Fields being the fourth quarterback taken in the draft, there was speculation as to how he stacked up against the top three picks in 2021.

Where does Chicago Bears, quarterback Justin Fields rank amongst QBs from his draft class?

Usually, it takes a couple of years in order for teams and NFL fans to see the long-term pan-out of these selections. For example, we are only just now getting clarity on the 2018 Draft, which saw Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold, now both Carolina Panthers backup quarterbacks, taken in the first three picks. Josh Rosen, the 10th pick, was replaced just a season later by future number-one overall pick Kyler Murray. Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, the latter of whom was taken 32nd overall, have emerged as the clearcut best quarterbacks from the draft, but it took some years to see it through.

In the case of the 2021 NFL Draft, there may be a clear path to see who is already playing the best in the NFL. Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields, the 11th overall pick and the fourth quarterback off the board, has already shown that he sits near the top of his quarterback class.
