The Chicago Bears have not had a Defensive Rookie of the Year since 2000 when linebacker Brian Urlacher began his Hall of Fame career in the Windy City. Since then, no Bears player on either side of the ball has been awarded rookie of the year outside of running back Anthony Thomas in 2001.

Nearly 20 years later, the Chicago Bears may have a Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate, and if you haven’t seen him mentioned with other contenders, Jaquan Brisker is determined to put his name in the mix if no one else will.

Chicago Bears rookie Jaquan Brisker needs to be in the conversation for Defensive Rookie of the Year

Selected with the 48th-overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, former Penn State safety Jaquan Brisker was selected based on potential, as he was slated to become a star player in Matt Eberflus’ defense. As a day-one starter, Brisker has performed well at his strong safety roll through nine games.

While Chicago Bears fans are certainly excited about Jaquan Brisker and how he will fit in this impending rebuild, Brisker is not receiving the national credit that he seems to think he deserves.

Below is Brisker’s reaction to being left off of the voting for Defensive Rookie of the Year through the first half of the season that was conducted via NFL on Fox.

Additionally, we can see Brisker’s reaction to an ESPN post from just a day later, where the Bears’ safety is left off the list of top-10 rookies on offense and defense.

Again, the NFL season is barely at the halfway point and as a player who is already a full-time starter, Jaquan Brisker will have plenty of opportunities to continue his impactful play and make his name known on a national level.

Through nine weeks, Brisker has accumulated 43 solo tackles, 3 sacks, an interception, and a fumble recovery. Only Tennessee Titans rookie Roger McCreary has more tackles, and second-overall pick Aidan Hutchinson, a defensive end, is the only rookie with more sacks than Jaquan Brisker.

Statistically, Jaquan Brisker should not only be in the conversation for Defensive Rookie of the Year but he very well might be in the lead. But Brisker isn’t even saying he should win it at this point, rather that he needs to be in the conversation.
