Chicago Bears Stud No. 2: Jack Sandborn

Jack Sandborn had quite the game today, and he filled up the stat sheet too. He led the team in tackles with 12 combined, and also had two sacks and an interception that was called back. He was all over the field making plays and really was the only hope on defense this week. There was not a lot to be excited for after the defensive effort, but Sandborn played hard and contributed as much as he could.

Sandborn is not only being asked to step up and start with Roquan Smith out, but he is also getting a tryout to see if he should be considered for the starting job again next season. The Bears are going to need to find some help at linebacker, and it will help a lot if Sandborn continues to play well this season.

Sandborn is not quite as athletic as Roquan Smith, so he is not the same type of linebacker, especially in pass coverage. His skillset shows more in run defense and blitzing rather than covering a tight end or running back, so it will be interesting to see how the other linebackers complement him.

Once again Sandborn is on the winners’ list because he does what is asked of him and more. He already is among the leaders on this team now with two sacks, but that might speak more about the lack of pass rush than it does about him. He is an exciting prospect who might have been a secret weapon waiting to be unleashed.
