5 questions Chicago Bears must answer at Atlanta Falcons
4. How will Chicago Bears running back rotation shake out
The Chicago Bears placed Khalil Herbert on IR this week, meaning he is going to be out for the next four games. This will be interesting to follow from the perspective of David Montgomery. Over the last four weeks, the Bear’s backfield went from an 80-20 split to a 60-40.
While it was still in favor of Montgomery, it was clear the Bears liked a little lightning with their thunder. So, the question becomes whether Trestan Ebner steps into the role that Herbert had, or if Montgomery takes over the backfield again.
When Montgomery was hurt, they stuck with the 80-20 workload. Ebner mostly saw the field in passing situations, which may not be good for his playing time on Sunday. Herbert struggles with passing downs, and the team always pulls him for Montgomery in this area.
So, Ebner taking that share from Herbert does not mean he will get the same work as Montgomery. Considering Ebner has not shown much between the tackles, we may see Montgomery with the biggest workload of his season. Ebner will play, but it may only be a series or two to keep Montgomery working.
The next four weeks may also determine how much money Montgomery gets offered in free agency. If he shows he is better in a timeshare, Chicago may be able to keep him, but if he explodes with 20 carries per game, he may get a deal that prices him out of Chicago.
