With the Chicago Bears putting Khalil Herbert on the IR, the team now is very thin at running back. As they currently stand David Montgomery and Trestan Ebner are the only two players on the active roster.

However, one name to keep an eye on in the coming 48 hours is Darrynton Evans. The Chicago Bears currently have Evans on the practice squad, and he has been there all season. With new NFL rules, teams are permitted to call up two players each week from the practice squad, to the active roster.

With that in mind, the team is likely to use one of those on Darrynton Evans. The other will probably be Gerri Green, considering Al-Quadin Muhamad is still hurt.

Considering the team will call up the third running back, it means they will likely make their sixth and seventh wide receiver inactive again on Sunday. Some fans would rather see someone like Velus Jones activated, and perhaps he could play the third running back spot in an emergency.

However, that is better thought in theory, than practice. Jones has admitted that adjusting to the NFL playbook at wide receiver, so it would take a full offseason to get him the running back playbook. While the third running back is unlikely to play, they are one turn of the ankle from David Montgomery away from a nightmare.

The team could not turn to Ebner and Jones in a backfield if their top runner went down. While Evans and Ebner are just as questionable, you could argue that Evans has a chance to be the better between the tackles runner of the two, and Ebner could even stay in his role as the complement.

That is the type of value that they cannot get if they do not activate a third running back. Another question will be what they do in four weeks. You can elevate a PS player three times in a season before you have to create a roster spot for them. Herbert is supposed to miss four games.

The team may have to get creative in a few weeks and sneak Evans onto the practice squad. Of course, with injuries and things changing every week that is a decision that will be made when they get to it. The team has until Saturday at 4 PM ET to make the roster move and call up Darrynton Evans.
