Last year, Matt Nagy would announce new captains each week. It became a joke as players who were added to the team were then announced team captains in such a short amount of time. Matt Eberflus quickly changed the way of doing things when he took over as the head coach of the Chicago Bears this offseason. Eberflus named four permanent captains. Two of those captains, Roquan Smith and Robert Quinn were traded away. The current four captains are Justin Fields, Cody Whitehair, Eddie Jackson and Justin Jones.
On top of the four permanent captains, the team also gives one other player an honorary captain role. This week, Matt Eberflus announced Cole Kmet will be the honorary captain vs the Falcons this week. Kmet has been lightning in a bottle over the last two weeks. In fact, it started three weeks ago when he finally broke the seal and scored his first touchdown in two years. Over the last three weeks, Kmet has 11 catches on 15 targets for 126 yards and five touchdowns.
Cole Kmet is named the Chicago Bears honorary captain for Week 11
Although the yardage isn’t great, scoring five touchdowns on 11 catches is highly efficient. With his impressive performance over the last few weeks, it only makes sense for Kmet to be named honorary captain. Outside of Justin Fields and maybe Khalil Herbert, Kmet has been the most explosive player on the Chicago Bears offense as of late.
I have been trying to tell people that Cole Kmet has untapped potential. Too many have already abandoned Kmet and moved on calling him a bust. It’s great to see him start to prove himself. The connection he is building with Justin Fields is fantastic. What I love about Kmet being named the honorary captain this week is he is facing off against Ryan Pace’s new team, the Atlanta Falcons.
Chicago Bears Flashback: Nick Foles fuels 4th quarter comeback
The Chicago Bears are facing the Atlanta Falcons this weekend. Here's a look back at the Bears comeback victory that was filed by Nick Foles.
Having Kmet as the captain vs the team of the general manager who drafted him makes me chuckle. Not because he was given the role undeservedly, but instead because he’s proven himself and earned it over the last few weeks. Potential that Pace and Matt Nagy were never able to truly tap into. It’s a good thing that Cole Kmet is good to go (thigh injury) this week. Justin Fields needs as many weapons as he can get.
