3 Chicago Bears coaches land on the future head coaching watch list
One of the big fears in the offseason was whoever the Chicago Bears new regime brought in as offensive coordinator, he might prove himself worthy enough to land a head coaching gig. Even worse, some thought it might happen as soon as 2023. This fear was because the team hired a defensive-minded head coach vs an offensive-minded head coach. Any time you have a revolving door for your coordinators, it makes it tough for players to maintain the same level of knowledge and execution.
Struggling to know and understand the coach’s playbook will mean that players will be playing slower than they need to be. That hesitation can lead to big plays against defensive players or a lack of production for the offense. Either way, it’s not good. When it comes to the current regime, the fear in the offseason was that Luke Getsy would land a promotion as a new head coach for another team. Is this concern becoming a reality?
Luke Getsy is one of three Chicago Bears coaches listed as a future head coach candidate
Tom Pelissero put out a list of current coaches he believes have a good shot of becoming future head coaches. He separated his list into coaches who should come up in the next coaching cycle (2023) and then another section of the list that lists coaches who could come up in head coaching searches in future years (2024 and beyond). Luke Getsy was found on the first section of this list. Getsy found himself on Pelissero’s portion of the list that specifies coaches who should be hired or at least interviewed this upcoming offseason.
Getsy and the Chicago Bears offense have found great success as of late. The team is averaging over 30 points per game for the last few weeks. The Bears’ offense is fifth in DVOA. Despite being in the top five on offense, losing has come too easily during that span. The Bears are 1-4 over their last five games. It’s strange how losing has been a positive while Justin Fields continues to not only develop, but also thrive.
Losing Getsy could be a big blow, but I still stand by the fact that Justin Fields will be just fine no matter who his offensive coordinator ends up being.
