Right now, it does not appear that Justin Fields will take any snaps for the Chicago Bears today. He is expected to test things out before the game and is a true game-time decision. However, the chances of him actually playing seems very slim. All reports are indicating that he is not going to play and Trevor Siemian will be under center instead. As soon as the news came out today that the team was promoting Nathan Peterman to the active roster from the practice squad, it seemed inevitable that Justin Fields would be missing this game vs the New York Jets.

Playing in a meaningless game like this, it does not make sense to have Justin Fields play. If the game was more important, say a playoff game, or even if the team was in the playoff hunt, then giving Fields a cortisone shot and having him play through the pain would be understandable. However, since the team is 3-8 and making the playoffs would be a miracle, there is no reason to play him against this Jets’ defense.

The Chicago Bears would not be wise to play Justin Fields this week

The Jets’ defense ranks sixth in defensive DVOA and is tied for fourth in the league with 32 sacks. The defensive line is dominant and we know that this Chicago Bears offensive line is not great against the pass rush. Having Justin Fields try to stand back in the pocket or even run the way he has over the last few weeks would be putting him in harm’s way. I still doubt we see him before Week 15 (the week after their bye) if at all.

Fields has been great over the last six weeks, but he still has areas to improve on.
