Justin Fields needs to hit on the big plays more consistently

Look, even Darnell Mooney came out and said that the missed deep ball vs. the Falcons was on him. That said, Justin Fields has had a few too many throws that were “just misses.” I don’t have a problem with Fields missing long as much as I do with him missing short. The underthrown balls haven’t been as big of a problem as the deep ones. The problem is that he’s left a few on the field that could have won this team games — that cannot happen on a consistent basis.

If we look at some of Fields’ Next Gen stats, you’ll see just how much he likes to throw the ball downfield. He also hasn’t had help from his receivers on some of these deep balls. Velus Jones missed a perfectly thrown ball. Dante Pettis has had a couple of similar drops this season too. When Fields has better talent around him — hopefully as soon as 2023 — his passing stats should start to look elite too.

As of right now, Justin Fields has the fourth-longest completed air distance at 59 yards. Only Josh Allen (60.1), Ryan Tannehill (61.7) and P.J. Walker (67.6) have completed further passes through the air. He also ranks fourth in average intended air yards and ninth in average completed air yards. Needless to say, he can throw the ball further downfield more successfully than many other quarterbacks in the league. This leads to the final area that Fields needs to work on.
