Chicago Bears Winner No. 3: David Montgomery, RB
The Chicago Bears have an interesting choice to make with David Montgomery in the offseason. He is a free agent and due for a decent contract considering his success and what he brings to the table. While it is not a great idea to overpay for a running back, the Bears are seeing the value that Montgomery brings to this team beyond just running the ball.
While Khalil Herbert is the more explosive athlete, Montgomery plays with effort on every play and does the little things so well. His ability to pick up blitzes and help in pass protection along with his ability to find an opening in the flat as a receiver has been very helpful to Justin Fields and this offense.
Montgomery has shown in the last few weeks that he can handle the full workload that he used to get before the emergence of Herbert. His stats have not been anything to write home about, but he has been very good in big situations. Against the Packers, he had a touchdown and converted some big third-down runs that kept the offense on the field.
He has stepped up in a big way after Herbert went on the IR, and he is playing himself into a new contract with the Chicago Bears. Ryan Poles would be smart to bring him back after the success of Herbert and Montgomery this season, and Montgomery should not be crazy expensive.
The Chicago Bears have been losing a lot of games and it has clearly hurt the morale of the team. Still, they play hard win or lose, and have been in most games this season. They have a lot to build off of for next season. It just is so hard to lose to the Packers after playing so well for three quarters.
