The Chicago Bears have activated Velus Jones after giving him a few weeks off. Still, he has been used minimally on offense, and most of the reason he has been getting a helmet is that he is replacing Dane Cruikshank on special teams.

In the three games since he has been back, he has played eight, 12, and 12 snaps. An interesting note is that he spent four snaps in the backfield over the past two weeks.

How can Chicago Bears get Velus Jones more involved on offense after the bye week?

The Chicago Bears had always talked about Jones being able to run the ball, and they have given him jet sweeps, but the first time they straight-up lined him in the backfield was against the New York Jets. Velus Jones spent two snaps in the backfield, first we see him in a split backfield with Darrynton Evans.

Below, the Chicago Bears running the wildcat, and Darrynton Evans has Velus Jones as his sidecar. Neither situation had Jones touch the football, and in the wildcat scenario, he was the lead blocker for Evans.

After slowly working it in, they went back to it for two snaps against the Green Bay Packers. First, he was in the wildcat again. This time he was with David Montgomery. Again, they did not use Jones in any manner.

Still, they did extend off of this. Here, Jones is a single back and is lined up like a running back. He takes a toss play just like a running back would. The play went for nothing, but it starts to open up other things.

The Chicago bears should and probably will not be running much wildcat. It made sense with Trevor Siemian, but not when Justin Fields is a threat as a runner anyways.

However, they can continue to branch off of getting Jones in the backfield. Making him a sidecar with Montgomery or Evans gives the offense multiple threats. Beyond that, when they put him on the field as the single back, they could be five wide but have a running back. Or, they could be heavy, besides the fact that they do not have a running back. It gives them options.

Just flashing it before the bye week at least puts the idea into the team’s heads. Now, Luke Getsy can build off of it, and show different looks from this. Keep an eye on how much more Velus Jones plays in the backfield moving forward.
