2. Chicago Bears may be cutting Trestan Ebner soon

I know this is far too soon to say this, but it is hard to watch Ebner and his trajectory and not think of Kerryth Whyte. Whyte was speedy, explosive, and versatile, but in the NFL he was kind of just a gadget player with no specialty. That could be Ebner, who was almost more of a wide receiver than a running back at Baylor.

Still, because he was that type of weapon, and he lined up in the backfield, he fit what the Chicago Bears wanted. The issue is that when you have a running back who is not really a running back, and you need a running back, you are in trouble.

Ebner had to step in for the injured Khalil Herbert, and was running into linemen on rushing plays, and causing sacks on passing snaps. The Chicago Bears immediately moved on Darrynton Evans.

Evans succeeding is going to hurt any future that Ebner has on the roster. When Herbert comes back, it is obvious that Ebner is the first running back to go back to the practice squad. From there, he can get poached anytime.

Still, if Herbert and Evans are back next years, Ebner is the third back at best. If they somehow re-sign David Montgomery, he is back on the practice squad. Beyond that, if they do not add Montgomery, they need a power back to be that third guy and not Ebner. It is hard to envision him on the active roster, not only by the season’s end but also in August.
