The San Francisco 49ers (Original Pick: Trey Lance #3)
After trading a haul to the Miami Dolphins to trade up to the third overall pick, the San Francisco 49ers elected to draft a developmental quarterback in North Dakota State’s Trey Lance to learn underneath veteran Jimmy Garoppolo. While this team is in a position to win now with an elite defense and a plethora of versatile offensive weapons, the addition of Justin Fields over Trey Lance would potentially make this team a Super Bowl favorite.
Trey Lance sat for his entire rookie season before making his starting debut in a road loss against the Chicago Bears during week one of the 2022 season, but after a season-ending injury the following week, the 49ers turned back to Garoppolo after an offseason where the team desperately tried to trade him.
Just imagine if this team had Justin Fields in his current form. It would be somewhat surprising if Trey Lance, especially after this injury, ever got close to what the league has seen from Fields so far in his career. A versatile quarterback, this would bring a new dimension to head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense, which has been successful with immobile quarterbacks such as Matt Ryan and Garoppolo.
An offense with Fields, Deebo Samuel, Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk, and George Kittle is an impossibly dynamic unit. Assuming the defense is still an elite group in this hypothetical, the 49ers would be one of the most intimidating teams, not only in the NFC but in the league as a whole.
