Justin Fields sets new Chicago Bears franchise record
By Peter Jurich
Despite a 25-20 loss at home against the top-seeded Philadelphia Eagles, Justin Fields continued his record-breaking season as the Chicago Bears quarterback.
Chicago Bears QB, Justin Fields joins two great quarterbacks in NFL record books
In the first half, Justin Fields had an insane 39-yard scramble which not only set up the Bears inside the 10-yard line but put Fields in elite company in a couple of different ways.
With 82 rushing yards in the first half alone, aided greatly by his fantastic scramble, Fields became the first Bears’ quarterback to have over 1,000 rushing yards in a season. He joins only Lamar Jackson and Michael Vick as quarterbacks to hit that mark on the ground in one season.
In total, Fields accounted for 95 yards on the ground on Sunday and was able to add 152 yards and two touchdowns as a passer. Entering Week 15 against the Eagles, the Chicago Bears were already the number one rushing team in the NFL — the Eagles coincidentally being second.
The Bears out-rushed the Eagles with 152 yards to 112, and both quarterbacks played a big part in the run game. While Fields had 95 rushing yards on only 15 attempts, Eagles’ quarterback Jalen Hurts had 61 rushing yards with three touchdowns on 17 carries.
Fields was unable to score on the ground, but the Bears quarterback accounted for two touchdowns with zero turnovers, and Hurts’ three total touchdowns were accompanied by two interceptions.
Both quarterbacks played well and showed their abilities as a dual threat weapon, but Fields’ performance is just another example of his record-breaking capabilities.
Justin Fields has seemingly broken a new record every week, especially on the ground. However, surpassing the 1,000-yard mark as a rusher may be his most impressive yet.
Not only is it rare in NFL history for a quarterback to hit this milestone, but Fields has hit this mark in only 13 games. Additionally, Fields isn’t just a good runner for a quarterback, but he has proven that he is an elite runner in the NFL amongst all positions. Only a select few elite running backs like Derrick Henry, Nick Chubb, and Saquon Barkley are ahead of the Bears’ quarterback.
Sunday’s game against Philadelphia was much closer than many would have thought, but while the Bears ended up with a loss, it still showed how much of a weapon Fields is in today’s league. With three more games this season, Fields will have plenty of opportunities to continue to improve against playoff-caliber teams in the Bills, Lions, and Vikings.
