Justin Fields’ Chicago Bears Christmas List: A new defensive line

Listen, Justin Fields is never going to say this, but you know deep down he wishes his defense was better. How often have we seen this team put up 24-plus points, just to see it squandered away by the defense? I know, it’s about time that the Chicago Bears offense performed, it’s just a shame the defense hasn’t been able to perform at even an average pace. It has flipped flopped from what we have seen over the last few decades.

Justin Jones has been the best defensive lineman on the roster. Trevis Gipson has been a disappointment and Al-Quadin Muhammad has been flat out awful. The Chicago Bears are dead last in the NFL with only 17 sacks. The sack leader on the team is still Jaquan Brisker. Brisker isn’t even a defensive lineman and he missed two games due to a concussion.

Behind Brisker is Roquan Smith who hasn’t been on the team in over a month. Again, not a defensive lineman. Jack Sanborn, Justin Jones and Trevis Gipson all are next with two sacks each. Finally, we have two linemen. Gipson hasn’t seen a sack since Week 2 vs the Packers.

If the run game was solid, then I’d be a little less concerned with the sacks. Unfortunately, even that area has been a major problem. Chicago is 31st in defensive DVOA as a whole and 27th vs the run. Ryan Poles could help Santa Claus out with this one by adding the likes of Daron Payne in free agency and/or drafting one of Will Anderson or Jalen Carter in the 2023 NFL Draft. If Poles can land Payne and top-end defensive lineman to pair with him and Justin Jones in the draft, Santa would have had to have been involved.
