Have Chicago Bears ended this experiment already?

The Chicago Bears have been working Alex Leatherwood in at right tackle over the last two weeks. The season is virtually over, Larry Borom is banged up, and they thought it was the right time to give the second-year player a chance to prove that he may have something to build off of in the offseason.

Leatherwood was eased into the lineup with 19% of the snaps against Green Bay, then played 29% of the snaps against the Eagles.

While this looks like a progression from Leatherwood on the surface, it also may be the end of his chances at right tackle.

Will Chicago Bears stop giving Alex Leatherwood chances at Right Tackle?

The issue is that his play was a drastic drop from Riley Reiff. Reiff gave up zero pressures over 23 snaps, while Leatherwood allowed four pressures in 10 pass-blocking chances. Four more pressure on 13 fewer snaps is an issue.

While you can credit the Eagles’ defensive line, he allowed an ugly pressure against Patrick Johnson, who was the main reason the team traded for Robert Quinn. Then, he allowed the sack to Haason Reddick that pushed the team out of field goal range, and forced them to punt.

Eberflus was not very open about their plans going forward with Leatherwood.

However, after he allowed that sack to Reddick, he did not play the entire second half. It was looking like he was going to finish with closer to 40% of the snaps, but with such a poor performance, they scrapped the idea at halftime.

Eberflus was non-commital about the plans, but saying that some guys are coming back is obviously Larry Borom. Borom was the guy at right tackle for a bit, but a concussion and knee injury have had him in and out of the lineup.

However, Borom was close to going Sunday and practiced in full today, signifying that he will be good to go. When Borom has been active, the team made Alex Leatherwood inactive.

That may not be the case this week, because both Teven Jenkins and Cody Whitehair are injured. In fact, from where we sit right now, the Chicago Bears may be more likely to play Alex Leatherwood at guard on Saturday than they will be to play him at tackle.

So far, both Borom and Reiff are better than Leatherwood, and he has failed at tackle with the Raiders. He has not been given a chance at guard yet, and Saturday may be his best, and one of his only chances.

Either way, if he is not ready to play at guard, it is hard to see him back at tackle. The team pulling the cord on the idea at halftime, the killer nature of his issues, and the return of Borom all point to Leatherwood being done at right tackle.
