Chicago Bears Surprise Cut Candidate: Trevis Gipson, DE

It might be a shock to people that the Chicago Bears move on from Trevis Gipson in 2023. After all, he has not lived up to expectations this year. Gipson was coming off of a seven-sack season in 2022. He was supposed to at least maintain that level of production or take another step forward. Neither seems to be happening.

I’ll point out that although Gipson only has two sacks, he has been as close as it comes to repeating his 2022 performance without actually showing up on the stat sheet. Through two fewer games, but with the exact same amount of snaps, Gipson only has three fewer pressures this year compared to last. The problem is, his two sacks both came in Week 2 vs the Packers. His sack numbers don’t reflect that to be the case though since he had seven last year and only two this year.

If you were looking to find a player to be as close as you can get without actually seeing results, Trevis Gipson has to be one of them. I have a feeling he will stick around, but this new regime doesn’t have any loyalty to Gipson and could decide to move on from him should they find better replacements for the position. Gipson is entering his fourth season and the final one left on his current contract. It’s possible Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus have seen enough and decide to move on from Gipson a year early.
